Mansfield, located at the foothills of Victoria's High Country, was settled in the 1840's after the nearby discovery of gold. The township was established in the 1850's when it became an important link to the gold rush towns of Jamieson and Woods Point. Mansfield was traditionally dependent upon agriculture and logging, however in recent times it has become a haven for tourists making the most of the many attractions Mansfield has to offer.
Mansfield is the largest town in close proximity to Mt Buller, with many snow lovers using Mansfield accommodation as their base. The town has a number of ski hire facilities. The town is supported by Mt Buller bus services that depart frequently during winter.
